I was part of the Union Board concerts committee at the time of this concert. This particular concert took place just prior to the start of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. As is the case for nearly all concerts, the management team for the artist allows for a certain number of complementary tickets to be distributed for the show. Since the IU men’s basketball team was heading to the NCAA tournament after being the Big Ten regular season champions, we decided to give a few of the comp tickets to players on the team who had interest in attending this concert. I hand delivered tickets to Tony Brown for he and Isiah Thomas at their apartment, and also gave tickets to Ray Tolbert and Landon Turner. During the show I was able to personally witness that all four of these players were having a great time enjoying the music of Cameo! Since the rest is history about the IU men’s basketball team going onto win the 1981 NCAA men’s basketball championship, I hope that this evening off to enjoy the Cameo concert played at least a small role in helping these players relax and renew prior to making their historic title run!
