Here’s my story from the concert:
A friend of mine was on friendly-ish terms with the folks who were running the concert, and —to make a very long story slightly shorter— I ended up spending the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s (who I’ve always considered my musical gods) set standing at the rear of the stage, right behind the amps.
Now, for those who know their music: Many times when they would play “Dance of Maya” live, they would do this thing where the whole band was playing in full earth-shaking thunder mode, and then instantaneously drop to it just being violinist Jerry Goodman plucking the “shuffle beat” from the song, _very_ softy on his violin.
Now, as I say, I was backstage, basically in the dark. And at the *exact* moment when they did this zillion-decibel drop, I happened to trip on some cables under my feet.
And then, for one heart-stopping instant, I had this terrifying image that I had somehow kicked out the power to Mahavishnu Orchestra’s amps!!
(I hadn’t, of course, and all was well. But still, it was one hell of a concert.)
